Goderich Heritage Conservation District Study and Plan

Goderich is known for its unique radial town plan: it is also known for the devastating effects of a tornado that swept through town in August, 2011. Bray Heritage was part of a consulting team retained by the Town to plan the rebuilding of the downtown core. Following that project, Bray Heritage was retained by the Town to prepare updates to the two existing HCD Plans and to assess the feasibility of adding a third HCD to take in the remaining properties in the downtown “square”. The Study included a full inventory and evaluation of the properties within the existing and proposed District as well as a thematic history of the downtown’s development, in order to define the area’s heritage character. The subsequent HCD Plan built on the success of the Downtown Master Plan project and represented the culmination of over 40 years of conservation initiatives in Goderich. The Study and Plan were adopted by Council and the District was designated, without objection.
